Anita Wilson writes in here of prison cells and pillow cases used to do literacy stuff... this is a very interesting bit of stuff from a US soldier in Iraq.
(I also liked her photo of a soldier reading Faust which I blogged earlier in the year.)

I have lost my faith in third space in that I am never sure where the third bit is.
But maybe I have existential angst.

Hi CB , I like the Sydney photos on your blog, by the way ...really impressive ... and of course all the London scenes.

As for Third Space, yes sorry it does need an explanation and I was being a bit pretentious putting up that reference there. But anyway for me it means the creation of a space where two different cultures come together and a new kind of culture develops - but in a manner where there is an appreciatrion of each of the two cultures and the third space allows further undertsanding of the previous cultures to develop. Ideally schools should do this for working class kids - help them into academia but also value their culture etc etc. There are a range of explanations anyway..

I think that the third space is a theoretical concept that is not necessarily confined to particular spaces - but I guess it sometimes is. Maybe the blogosphere represents a third space for some people; allowing a re-evaluation of life off line by interacting with others and the affinities and shared practice creates a third space for them all.

Myabe the 'borders' of third spaces are blurred; but of course they don't exist. For me it is a metaphor for the coming together of ideas, views and values and a re-negotiation of this..
but hey it's a bit late for all this.

Ah now I understand. Thank you Dr Joolz.
Maybe I WILL be able to write the chapter with you after all.
I was beginning to panic I was losing it.
