Research on the Internet

I am mesmerised by some of what I see on the Internet, and this teachers' chatroom has me gripped.
Check out what you think of this researcher's efforts to look for teachers to interview...

I would be really interested in what you guys think.

I thought the entire thing was disturbing - nobody comes off looking too good.

I like being researched too but I can't help but be suspicious of that person who said he was a primary education lecturer. When I enlisted participants I had to identify myself, my university, and have a very formal letter of invitation approved by the ethics committee before I posted my request. Just looking at that request makes me think either he is a very sloppy researcher, he doesn't have formal ethics approval, or else he's well..just suspicious. Hmmm maybe Australian ethics committees are different to UK?

Having said that, I think that teacher's stories related to traumatic events would be a worthwhile research angle to pursue.

PS: Kate, I am so surprised at the teachers / school who gave you such a hard time! When i was teaching I always had kids disappearing for various reasons - once I had a child take an entire term of schooling off to travel overseas with his parents. I figured the child was going to learn a whole lot more by traveling than they could possibily learn in my class and the only homework I set for them was to keep a journal/scrapbook of their experiences. Personally I think the grandfather's birthday is far more important, especially if you don't visit often!! Truancy - unbelievable!

Hiya
Yes we do have ethics committees but these are relatively new in Depts of Education and are a bit slow in taking off.
I think that anyone supervising that guy might not be pleased with his approach; my guess is that he is new to research as well as Teacher Training.
I agree, no one looks good in this.
It seems to me that teenagers tend to be much nicer in the chatrooms I have looked at!!

I was also thinking that the guy was obviously not a "native" of the community - he clearly hadn't made enough posts (if any) to become part of the community. If he was a member of the community they would surely not have reacted so badly towards him. People who just barge right into a community and act without decent netiquette are not likely to be received well. I think that's why I am scared to comment on almost any other blog regularly but DrJoolzs, since she is so welcoming! (And the other commenters are obviously also welcoming, well, except for Mr Satan).

I could tell you all stories of heated discourse in adult chatrooms - tales of betrayal, high drama, and the NUKING of troublesome visitors. It would shock you all!!

I think this is a very good point about hime being a newbie there.
He should have perhaps got to kknow the group a bit first.
Yes and I agree about commenting on other people's blogs. I am now more careful than I was.
