Greenpeace "Whale Embassy" protest against a whale meat processing plant, Ulsan, Korea.

I have beeen asked by Wackydoodler, a Flickr contact, to join a 'No Whaling' Virtual March.
This is a very exciting idea.
I found out as Wacky asked me to join this group.
Maybe you would like to also join.
Fascinating how Flickr is now joining activists online and using photographs as a way of protesting.
The concept of webspace being used as a march is aso pretty mindblowing as a metaphor.

Not only this but also.....

I have sent out a questionnaire to some of my Flickr contacts in order to just help me back out some of my hunches about the Flickr community. I will use some quotes for my paper at the UKLA conference.

It is incredible how Flickr is having such a powerful impact on people's lives but also at how AWARE many of them are, of the social learning processes they are involved in.

I had not realised either that there are Flickr meetups - attended internationally.

SO EXCITING.

Are you planning to do a lingusitic analysis of tagging, or a visual analysis of the image sets people use or the avatar they select?

I have done a quick click/flick through mine and see that there's a mix of conceptual and narrative images which suggests we are not simply using the photos to construct the narratives or stories in our lives, but also to represent ideas, topics, or concepts that we enjoy or are pursuing.

But what of the images that are macros - classically a la Kress and VL the macros represent a part/whole classification system under the conceptual umbrella. But the purpose of the macros is not to classify in any example i have seen of the macros. They seem to be more about the aesthetics and beauty of the part as a piece of art, not as part of any other conceptual grammatical system. They aren't designed to be symbolic (ticks off mental list of possibilities)...

Any suggestions? Oooohhh DrJoolz, maybe you could develop an elaboration of the system?

The abstract for the UKLA conference is this:
Visual Literacies, affinity spaces and on-line learning

This paper, arising from an autoethnographic study of blogging, presents an insider view of an online community of adults involved in sharing digital photography through a host website, ‘Flickr’. It identifies evidence of literacy and language development, tracing threads through the social interactions of strongly motivated participants in an online affinity space. It describes how the space fosters reciprocal teaching/learning partnerships in a dynamic multimodal environment. The paper argues for a broadening of existing definitions of literacy, at a time when the visual mode increasingly works interactively with verbal cues and explanations. The work has implications for pedagogy as well as for curriculum content.

So it is very much looking at the use of the online space as an arena for learning; in describing the learning and the space I want to use the voices of others within it. In talking about what is being learned, I am looking for evidence in comments and so on.
I am then going to do a more developed piece for Visual Communication, which will look in more detail at the multimodal affordances and the way the different modes interact with each other.

That's the plan anyway!!

Do I need to order some theory books so I can understand how you make sense of it? I have ordered Angela McRobbie's introduction to culture and communications study book where she introduces all the big sociologists drawn from in this field. I often seem to need to go right back to the big people from azges ago to work out how the theories were developed before I can make sense of how what I see can fit in and when. I am slow like that. Meanwhile I just came across research related to adolsecent girls talking about fashion, make-up and their love of pink. I must blog it later!!!

Anya
God knows what the paper will be like but I can promise you with my hand on my heart it will not be hard to understand and will not have difficult theory stuff.
It will be pink and fluffy just like girls'stuff is meant to be.
No, seriously it will have a bit od stuff about 'space' a nd a bit of stuff about social learning and it will have lots of pictures!!
